Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-grafted (PIPAAm) dishes were utilized for the recovery of confluently cultured cells as a monolayer sheet by thermal treatment. The recovered cells were viable, keeping their morphologies as well as the cell-cell junctions. The density of hepatocytes (HC) recovered onto the bottom surface of the cell culture increased approximately 1.4 times than that observed on PIPAAm. The increase in cell density affected the function of recovered HC as judged by albumin synthesis as well as ornithine carbamoyltransferase (OCT) activity. Albumin synthesis increased after the recovery of HC onto the cell culture.
