The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has led to increased attention paid to ventilation of air. In particular, the increased time spent at home due to the spread of remote work and class has drawn attention to importance of residential ventilation. However, ventilation by opening windows has the problem what it is difficult to block out road traffic noises or daily-life noises from neighbors. In this study, we designed and evaluated a ventilation duct with adequate sound insulation performance. A genetic algorithm was used to design Helmholtz resonators installed inside the duct. The sound insulation characteristics of the duct was evaluated by finite element simulation and laboratory measurement, and the results have shown that the designed duct had enough sound-performance to maintain the sound environment inside a room with a high-sound insulation window sash.
