A soda-lime-silica glass was subjected to heat treatment under an atmosphere of ammonia gas flow in order to modify the glass surface by introducing nitrogen atoms generated by the decomposition of ammonia. The amount of introduced nitrogen in the glass surface by treatment at 870°C for 24 h was determined to be 0.4-0.5 × 1022 atoms/cm3 by the analysis based on the 14N(d, α)12C reaction using a deuteron beam.
