Interaction between polarized UV light and hybrid materials of chiral schiff base octahedral Cu(II) complexes with azobenzene

A hybrid of anisotropic functional materials such as metal complexes and optical polymers is expected to bring useful new functional materials. In order to induce molecular orientation like symmetry operation of crystals, we have studied on circulary or linearly poliarized UV light irradiation to hybrid materials of azobenzene Schiff base metal complexes in polymer films systamatically. Azobenzene exhibites Weigert effect to align their long molecular axis in perpendicular to electric vector of linearly polarized UV light as well as in herical alighment by circuraly polarized light. For example, chiral Schiff base distorted octahedral Cu(II) complexes (R = H and Cl) were investigated proper wavelength of irradiating UV light by means of CD and polarized UV-vis spectroscopy. In this chapter, we showed challenges to create a screw axis like orientation not only rotational but also translational symmetry still as operations working hypotheis by using octahedral complexes of non-planar chromophores for the first time.
