We introduced poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) brush onto silica bead surfaces with various graft densities and chain lengths by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. Ulitilizing these PIPAAm-grafted beads as chromatographic column matrixes, temperature-dependent elution profiles of steroids were examined at various temperature. Chromatograms with narrow peak widths were obtained by decreasing graft density of PIPAAm. Consequently, the graft density of PIPAAm affects the separation efficiency of PIPAAm grafted columns.
