Abstract

The large number of multiple-dwelling houses that were built in the period of high economic growth in Japan are gradually aging. Renovation of these deteriorated dwelling units is important for the transition to a stock-based society. This study verified the specific impacts of the combination of different level of refurbishment and heating systems on indoor thermal environment and energy consumption. In addition, through Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, we confirmed details of the indoor thermal environment. Air-conditioning heating and floor heating were measured. It was found that the replacement level and heating system have a major effect on the thermal environment near the floor and energy consumption. In particular, the presence or absence of airtight renovation effects a major change in vertical air temperature differences and energy consumption. In addition to this, it was found that renovation does not have a negative influence on the indoor thermal environment during the summer.
