Kaitocphalin was isolated from Eupenicillium shearii as a glutamate receptor antagonist, which protected chick telencephalic neurons as well as rat hippocampal neurons from kainate toxicity. It consists of a pyrrolidine moiety with tricarboxylic acids and a dichlorohydroxybenzoate substructure: as shown in Figure 1.
