Structural performance of multi-story RC shear walls with multiple door openings

A strength reduction factor related to door openings has been adopted for RC shear wall design in ALT standard, while multi-story shear walls with eccentrically-aligned door openings and diagonally-aligned door openings have not been verified experimentally. This paper reports laboratory tests of three 1/4 scale shear wall specimens, verifying the structural performance of multi-story shear walls with different layout of door openings. Furthermore, based on the analytical results, a new loading method with a couple of concentrated loads simplified distributed loads was proposed and applied to the experiment. Consequently, the seismic performance of the specimens with openings showed different tendency on the maximum strength and failure pattern under the positive and negative loads due to the unsymmetrical layout of the openings.
