Abstract

Five medium materials or structures for the design and fabrication of Si lasers, which are the nanocrystalline Si (nc-Si) films with strongly three dimensional quantum confined effects, high purity bulk Si with artificial modifications, rare-earth-doped nc-Si films, intersubband transition-based Si quantum cascade structures and stimulated Raman scattering-based SOI waveguides are proposed. An overview of the state of the art for the high efficient electroluminescence (EL), photoluminescence (PL), optical gain and stimulated emission of these materials is given. Finally, some existing problems are discussed.
