Abstract

For the efficiency of function of steel buildings, openings typically circular holes are installed in web of beams to accommodate building service. Structural performance of such beams at normal temperature is understood well, however, their performance at elevated temperatures has not been well investigated. Deterioration of strength and stiffness of steel material, local deformation around a hole, shear stress develops in web posts may result in a different behavior at elevated temperature. Two full-scale protected steel beams with different opening spacing were subjected to fire test. Collapse behaviors including collapse time, deflection and out-of-plane deformation were reported and comparatively discussed.
