The Space Systems Laboratory of Kyutech (Kyushu Institute of Technology) has been studying unmanned suborbital winged rocket as a research subject of future fully reusable space transportation system since 2005. There are still a lot of engineering issues with regard to flexible and robust automatic flight system. The flight experiments of a small-scaled experimental winged rocket were conducted since 2008 aiming at evaluation of fundamental aerodynamic design, flight characteristics, navigation, guidance and control performance. So far the small-scaled winged rocket has been launched five times, the flight data has been measured successfully. The current experimental rockets under development by Kyutech have a body length of 1. 5m, and weigh about 50kg. INS-GPS-ADS (Inertial Navigation System/ Global Positioning System/Air Data System) hybrid navigation algorithm, real time GA (Genetic Algorithm) guidance algorithm, and attitude control based on, and adaptive control theory are the main research issues for demonstration using winged rockets. This paper summarizes the recent flight test results and introduces current status of the project.
