Characterization of the Micro Organism Mobility in In-Situ Bioremediation: Visualization using micro-focus X-ray CT Scanner

Abstract

In this paper, a new method is proposed for the characterization of microorganism mobility in in-situ bioremediation. The efficiency of the bioremediation is assessed in laboratory tests with micro-focus X-ray CT image analysis. The main outcomes of this research are as follows: (1) the proposed method can characterize microorganism mobility in soil specimens, (2) a new image-analysis method is proposed for identifying a front of density change due to the presence of microorganisms, and (3) the microorganism mobility process can be monitored by X-ray CT images. A micro focus X-ray CT scanner is a useful tool for characterizing the microorganism mobility in soil, offering helpful information on designing in-situ bioremediation for the contaminated ground.
