Appearance of unidirectional superstructure in silver intercalated 2H-NbSe2

Abstract

We report scanning tunneling microscopy study to clarify the modulation structure in silver intercalated stage 2 2H-NbSe2 at low temperature. In addition to the surface structure expected from previous electron diffraction measurements, we observed unidirectional superstructure with period of 23a0. Appearance of this new superstructure indicates that the instability of original charge density wave in pristine 2H-NbSe2 against strain induced by intercalants.
