A Highly Accurate Instantaneous Frequency Estimation Method Taking into Account the Aliasing of Oscillation Components

Abstract

The instantaneous frequency of a single sine wave can be estimated using a Hilbert transformer. However, since the amplitude characteristics of a finite-order Hilbert transformer have a ripple, the estimated value contains an oscillation components. It has been shown that the frequency of the oscillation components is an even multiple of the frequency of the input signal. In this paper, we show that aliasing occurs in the oscillation components when using the FIR Hilbert transformer to estimate the discrete-time signals. Then, we propose a variable filter that takes into account the aliasing of the oscillation components, and show that this filter improves the accuracy of the instantaneous frequency estimation.
